Max Naumann

Assimilationist German Jewish politician

Max Naumann was a German Jewish politician who played a significant role in the country's political landscape. He is best known as the founder of the Verband nationaldeutscher Juden, an organization that advocated for the assimilation of Jews into German society. The core principle of this league was the elimination of Jewish ethnic identity, with the aim of integrating Jews into the broader national community.

Naumann's organization operated until it was outlawed by the Nazi government on 18 November 1935. The league's demise marked a significant turning point, highlighting the increasingly hostile environment faced by Jewish individuals and organizations in Germany during this period. Through his work with the Verband nationaldeutscher Juden, Naumann represented a strand of thought that sought to reconcile Jewish identity with a strong sense of German nationalism, albeit through the erosion of distinct Jewish ethnic identity.
