Jacob Epstein (banker)
kupiec i filantrop, polski Żyd
Jacob Epstein was a prominent Polish banker and philanthropist of Jewish descent, born in 1771. He achieved significant success in his early career, relocating to Warsaw where he accumulated a substantial fortune. As a result, he became a leading figure in the city, known for his business acumen and influential position. Epstein was also a pioneer in adopting European customs, being the first Jew in Warsaw to modernize his attire and that of his family, moving away from traditional Jewish dress.
Epstein's life took a dramatic turn during the November Uprising of 1830-31, when he actively supported the faction advocating for Polish independence. He even held an officer's position in the insurrectionary army. However, he later managed to regain the favor of the Russian government, as evidenced by his appointment as banker to the treasury commission of the Kingdom of Poland in 1838. Epstein passed away in 1843, leaving behind a legacy as a notable banker and philanthropist in Polish history.
