Isaac ben Reuben Albargeloni

Isaac ben Reuben Albargeloni was a renowned Spanish Talmudist and liturgical poet, born in Barcelona, Catalonia. His notable career included serving as a judge in the Denia community, where he formed a significant connection with ibn Alḥatosh, likely through marriage. This connection had a lasting impact, as one of his descendants was the prominent Moses ben Naḥman, also known as Naḥmanides. Additionally, Judah Albargeloni is believed to have been among his pupils, further highlighting his influence as a scholar.

Isaac ben Reuben Albargeloni's contributions to Jewish scholarship are evident in his written works, including commentaries on sections of the tractate Ketubot. At the age of 35, he translated Hai Gaon's Ha-Miḳḳaḥ weha-Mimkar from Arabic to Hebrew, a work focused on buying and selling. As a liturgical poet, his Azharot poems are particularly noteworthy, having been incorporated into the rituals of various communities, including those in Constantine, Tlemçen, Tunis, Morocco, Algeria, and Oran.
