Elijah Bashyazi
Crimean Karaite hakham (1420–1490)
Elijah Bashyazi was a prominent Crimean Karaite hakham who lived from 1420 to 1490. Born into a family of learned Karaite hakhams in Adrianople, Bashyazi received his initial instruction in Karaite literature and theology from his father and grandfather. This foundational education laid the groundwork for his future scholarly pursuits.
Bashyazi furthered his studies in Constantinople under the guidance of Mordecai Comtino, where he expanded his knowledge to include rabbinical literature, mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy. He demonstrated exceptional proficiency in these fields, becoming a skilled and well-rounded scholar. Through his academic endeavors, Bashyazi established himself as a notable figure in the Karaite community, making significant contributions to the realm of philosophy.
