Benno Straucher

Romanian politician

Benno Straucher was a prominent politician and lawyer from Bukovina, who played a significant role in Austro-Hungarian and Romanian politics. As a Jewish nationalist, he was influenced by classical liberalism and Zionism, which shaped his political career. Straucher began his political journey in Czernowitz city, where he held various offices and later became a notable representative in the Austrian Parliament's upper chamber, the Abgeordnetenhaus, after 1897.

Straucher's political career was marked by his instrumental role in creating the Progressive Peasants' Fellowship, a reformist organization. He maintained his seat in the Abgeordnetenhaus until the end of Austria-Hungary's existence. From 1906 onwards, he led the Jewish National People's Party locally and contributed to the establishment of the pan-Austrian Jewish National Party. Straucher's political endeavors often put him at odds with other groups, particularly the Zionist People's Council Party led by Mayer Ebner, with whom he had a personal rivalry, as they vied for influence over the Bukovina Jewish community.
