Amira Hess

Israeli poet and artist (1943–2023)

Amira Hess was a renowned Israeli poet and artist, born in 1943. She immigrated to Israel in 1951 and initially resided in a refugee transit camp before settling in Jerusalem, where she spent the remainder of her life. Hess established herself as a prominent figure in Israeli literature, publishing her first book, "And the Moon is Dripping Madness," which earned her the prestigious Luria Prize. This marked the beginning of a prolific career, during which she authored numerous volumes of poetry in Hebrew.

Throughout her career, Hess published 13 volumes of poetry, including notable works such as "Two Horses by the Light Line," "The Information Eater," "Yovel," and "There is no Real Woman in Israel." Her poetry has been translated into several languages, including English, French, German, Greek, Spanish, and Russian, introducing her work to a global audience. Hess's contributions to Israeli literature were recognized with several awards, including the Prime Minister's prize for poetry, which she received twice, as well as The Yehuda Amichai Prize and the Kugel & AHI Award for poetry. She passed away in 2023, leaving behind a legacy as a celebrated Israeli poet and artist.
