Herbert Marcuse

Herbert Marcuse was a renowned German-American philosopher, sociologist, and political theorist, born in 1898 in Berlin. He pursued higher education at the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin and later at the University of Freiburg, where he earned his PhD under the guidance of esteemed philosopher Martin Heidegger. Marcuse's academic background laid the foundation for his future work as a prominent figure in the field of critical theory.

As a key associate of the Frankfurt School, Marcuse was affiliated with the Institute for Social Research, a hub for intellectual inquiry and critique. Through his written works, he presented a scathing critique of various societal institutions, including capitalism, modern technology, and Soviet Communism, as well as popular culture. Marcuse argued that these entities represented novel forms of social control, thereby influencing his perspective on the human condition. His philosophical contributions had a lasting impact, shaping the discourse on critical theory until his passing in 1979.
